This is our new video for the song "Henny Penny" from Carpe Carp. It's directed by Jack Sheridan from Laneway Pictures who also did our video for "DQYDJB" and is hard at work on a video for "Vespa" as well. It's basically a snapshot of a strange thing that's been happening down in Adelaide lately, where there's a conflict between these street preachers and... everyone else in Adelaide. We went down on two nights, handed out 100 kazoos, acted like a pack of dickheads and Jack was there to capture all the chaos. Like to thank all of our friends that came out on the night and made cameo appearances, I won't name names lest ye become undesirably googleable. But thank you.

For those of you outside of Adelaide, my two cents and a little background: These street preachers (they're going to take this in more flattering tone than it is intended) are the "God-hates-Fags" Phelps family of Adelaide. They preach in our main shopping mall every Friday, now to much protesting. Businesses in their proximity have suffered from their presence and the council has tried to remove them on several occasions. Being sufferers of a very sizeable messianic complex (though technically, I feel we are the sufferers of their messianic complex) and and an ironically sizeable Napoleonic complex too (would explain the standing on a box) they have turned this into some martyrdom fantasy whereby they are the poor, vilified Christ-like figures, and Adelaide City Council are the Romans, ever lashing at them for spreading the good word.

This fantasy is pathetic and overly flattering and on two counts. Firstly, Adelaide is commonly known as "The City of Churches" - while I've always felt the name was unwarranted as demographically we aren't particularly more Christian than the other capital cities (I suppose all the good nicknames were taken), we do have an overwhelming Christian majority here and the idea of a persecuted Christian in Adelaide is laughable, bordering on cute. Secondly, there is an old man who has been handing out bibles unmolested by the council, or anyone, in the very same mall, for as long as I can remember. He seems like a nice man and I've even taken one from him just to make his day (one day I want to give it back, all highlighted and doggy-eared and say "YOU CHANGED MY LIFE MAN"). Even he came out on television denouncing the methods of these street preachers. So, it isn't the case that Adelaide City Council, or the people of Adelaide have a problem with religion in the mall, it's just that we don't like dickheads in the mall.

To put it more simply: These guys comparing themselves to Jesus is a little like us saying our music is as good as The Beatles' because we have similar haircuts. They're not the messiah, they're just very naughty boys. I doubt they've converted a single person to Christianity, I doubt they even intend to, their whole preaching routine is just a circle-jerk of self-gratification and attention seeking (I'm in a band, so I'd know). And for me personally, their insistence on portraying themselves as champions of freedom of speech and religion (which I'm a big fan of- freedom I mean) lost it's weight after I encountered them threatening to have a heckler "arrested for blasphemy".

My personal suggestion in this situation is that they be allowed to preach (take away their amplification though, let them compete at the same level as dissenters) - but that we legalise some non-harmful version of assault, like hitting people over the had with pool noodles. As I see it, everyone wins: Those that dislike the preachers will be able to vent their frustration and reciprocate their annoyance, by (hopefully in large numbers) whacking the preachers over the head with something too soft to actually do them any further damage. The preachers could of course have pool noodles of their own and we could all just bop each other over the head. Couldn't be any less productive than yelling at each other en masse. It'd certainly be quieter. Stores could recoup lost business by selling the pool noodles. And the street preachers will love it because it feeds into their adorable "persecuted soldier of Christ" narrative. That, or make the mall private property - so you wouldn't have to allow preaching in the mall any more than you have to allow the Harris Scarfe spruiker to interrupt church services to let people know about the sale on women's underwear on level 2. It'd get the preachers out of the mall pretty quickly, but I don't see the Adelaide City Council getting behind the idea.

Thanks to everyone who came out early to see us open for Deerhoof. We were really happy to play with such a great band and I think for Tony in particular playing with a band that has been one of his favourites for such a long time was a pretty surreal experience. This is a new song of ours from the night, for now it's called "Game Show". Planning to unveil a new song or two at every show for the next few months.

The Honey Pies have just finished 5 days of recording our untitled second album. It's sounding great and we'd really like to get it into your hands, and ears, as soon as possible. We've paid for the first part of the recording process ourselves, and we're looking for the funds to finish the job (mixing, mastering and printing). We will be covering the lion's share of the album's budget ourselves, but a little assistance from friends of the band will help us to release the album a lot sooner than if we do it all ourselves.

We're trying to raise $3000. What we need is 100 people who are willing to pay $30, for which they will receive ENTRY TO THE LAUNCH PARTY ($10 value), a CD COPY OF THE ALBUM ($20 value), and a bunch of bonus goodies as well (details below). Essentially, you're pre-paying for the record, which will be released later this year. I am very tired. My mind is very. What's that word? Tired. We are well into day (night, really) four of five, recording our second album. Of... I don't know how many. Let's finish this one first and see how we feel after. I am very tired. We're in our our 11th hour for today. This is Jon. From The Honey Pies. Me and Tony (he is also tired) are here in the studio with our new friend Dave Crowe. Marcus went home because he was tired. Tom has left to go and move house all night. He'll be tired tomorrow. Me and Tony might go all Billy Corgan on their asses and re-record all their parts while they're gone. He's sleeping with a Veronica. Good on him.

The album has no title yet. I really want to call it "A Single Plum, Served in an Old Man's Hat, Filled with Perfume", or "Hey Chuck! It's Your Cousin... Marvin Berry... You Know That New Sound You Been Looking For? Listen to THIS". But the boys won't let me. With good reason. It has twelve songs on it. They are called Vespa, Romeo, My O My O Me O My, Henny Penny, Guy Fawkes Day, Henny Penny, Rubix Cube, Girl, I (H) NY, Banana Republic, Y2K and Candlelight. We've finished all the bed tracks with the rhythm guitar, bass guitar and drums. Tony is finishing his last few guitar parts for the album. On the last album Kingsmill said it sounded like Tony drank too much coffee. I shudder to think what he'd say this time. We're drinking a lot of coffee. I'm drinking 3-4 litres of tea a day. Does tea have caffeine? Tom says it does but I can't tell when he's joking. Anyroad. I've sung... Half my vocals. We're on schedule but working to an insane schedule where we perpetually feel behind schedule. We're very tired.

Tomorrow is our last day here. We're going to be doing singing probably all day. Pianos. Tamborines. Organ. Handclaps all that shit. We've got a very capable one-man horn section to record tomorrow. We've got a two-man string quartet (shut up) coming in tomorrow also. What else. I think thats it. We had a choir come in tonight, Choral Grief. They just left. They were amazing. They're singing at the end of our last song. Big cheesy opus. Possibly the best or worst thing we've done so far. My personal aim for the album is that is that it sounds exactly the same as the last one, while sounding completely different at the same time. And I think we're simultaneously succeeding and failing to fulfil that objective (see what I did there? These are the jokes people). By the end of this week I'll have eaten 75 dumplings. Between the other members of the band... Something north of 200. It smells bad here. And we're very, very tired.

Anyway, we'll be finished recording tomorrow, or into the wee hours of the day after. Then we'll be mixing/mastering within the next 2 months. We'd like to release this thing around November/December... Full of excitement and dread. Feel that that Phillip Seymour Hoffman character in Synechdoche, NY... What is this beast we have created and how have we managed to rope in so many capable, talented people? Fuck. I am so fucking tired. Now I understand how John Lennon feels in that song where he sings about being so tired. It must be exhausting being a walrus.

For the love of God, do not call or SMS any member of The Honey Pies before midday on Saturday morning. WE HAVE EARNT A SLEEP-IN.

First things first, we've been cutting back on the shows a little but we're getting back into the swing o' shit this Friday, and every Friday hence throughout June. We're playing a residency at the Grace Emily, which is in the opinion of this Honey Pie one of the finest establishments in Adelaide. For those of y'all who can only read caps: that's every FRIDAY night in JUNE at the GRACE EMILY.

Jon here. Hello, hello. This is our second in a string of low-budget videos we've released for 'Think of England'. We actually spent a little more on this one ($11.20) than we did on our last one ($0), so clearly we're moving up in the world. Since 'Hair of the Dog' is a punk song about sex, we figured it made sense that the video would be obscene and perverse. I'd like to think somewhere Voltaire is rolling in his grave... with laughter. Its a flickbook-style animation and it was inspired by the artist James Unsworth whose work we discovered while on tour in Sydney. There's a censored and uncensored version of the video, the latter of which we've left unlisted on youtube to prevent anyone unwillingly slumbling upon it and to extend the amount of time before it is inevitably removed, at which time we will find another home for it.

Tony and I are playing some acoustic shows here and there, but for the most part the band will be pretty quiet until June when we have our residency at the Grace Emily every Friday. We'll have more information about that soon, we may be doing something special for the shows that relates to our next album.

At least two more music videos in the making, we'll release them as they're finished. One of them is a flash-mob thing we're going to need volunteers for; we'll be sending invitations to all our Facebook friends, so if you want to get involved head over to our facebook page and become our friend. This is our* new music video for the song 'Don't Mention the War', from the album 'Think of England'. We feel it is pretty self-explanatory.

We're working on a few videos in-house and we'll release them as they're (read: if they're) completed. Since a video is really a bit of a luxury for a piss ant band like ours, they're all being done on the cheap (in every sense of the word, as you can see) for a bit of a laugh. What little cash we have, we just put towards recording/touring/lapdances. We were inspired by Ariel Pink's 'Round and Round' video which was shot on Wayne Coyne's phone.

We're debuting a bunch of new songs at the GRACE EMILY this Saturday night (MAR 26). Danvers & Ghost Knife and Lenin-McCarthy are opening. It would be an honour and a privilege to see you there. (Facebook invite here)

After rocking-out the rained-out Fuse Festival and a sold-out Adelaide Uni O-Live, the worn-out Honey Pies have taken some time-out this month to hang-out and rehearse. Come-out to the Grace Emily on March 26th to hear the boys try-out some new material, with their far-out friends Danvers & Ghost Knife and Lenin-McCarthy...Because with-out you, its just not a party.

Money-permitting, we'd like to put out another record later this year so we've been practising a few brand new songs, and some old ones that didn't see the first album. We'll pretty much learn a whole bunch of songs then work out a dozen or so that work together. New song titles include: My O My O Me O My, Falling Sky/Henny Penny, Rubix Cube, Houndstooth, Baby Girl, Guy Fawkes Day, Yours to Keep, I Heart NY, Candlelight, Vespa, Banana Republic, Kim Jong Il... We'll be trying some of these out on the 26th but if you yell out something you want to hear from the album we'll play it too. The Grace Emily is where we've played some of our favourite shows, as you can see from our upcoming gigs section ---> we're playing there quite a lot in the next few months, so it should be a good one and we've of course love to see you there.

I don't want to be too much of an Eeyore or a Negative Nancy but I'm looking forward to this show tomorrow so much I feel like the rest of the year is going to be all downhill for us. The show sold out unfortunately (or is that "fortunately"? See, there's that glass-half-empty streak again), sorry to anyone that missed out. Been working on the site a little, its still a bit glitchy so bear with me for a few days. First music video from the album is coming out soon.

Happy new year ladettes and gentrymen from your friends The Honey Pies. 2010 was a fun year for us. We played a lot of shows. We made an album. And on it's surface, 2011 is looking to be much the same. We're already booked to play a lot of shows, and we're planning to put out another album within the year. But... who knows what surprises we might be in for.

Our album 'Think of England' is now available for sale over at bandcamp, and it'll turn up on iTunes soon. You can also purchase CD copies of the album at the bandcamp page or at any of our gigs. I am told the vinyl copies of our album are due any day now, and we'll have those available at gigs as well. The response to the album so far has been quite positive and it's really interesting hearing what different people take away from it. Local-music-aficionado and alleged cult-leader Spoz recently declared it to be "Best Local Album of the Year". Sure, it's no Rolling Stone cover, but its gotta be worth at least a dozen ARIAS. At least to me.

Loads of shows coming up. Tony and I (Jon. Hi.) are playing a lot of acoustic shows to test out some new songs. In February we've got two shows we're really excited about... Playing at Rymil Park for the Fuse Festival opening, and playing Adelaide Unibar with Leader Cheetah and The Jezabels. Its a ways-off but we're also playing a residency at the Grace Emily in June.

Also, I've updated the site a little to make it easier to navigate and I've added an email list you're welcome to sign up for. That's about all for now. Hope this finds you well. Jon.

First and foremost, on behalf of the other boys I just want to thank all the folks who came out to our Adelaide album launch the other night at Jive. You may know from experience, and if not you can probably imagine... but making an album is ~~a pain in the arse~~ a challenge. We were all thrilled and relieved to be finished with it, and it was amazing having so many friends and punters come out and celebrate with us. Thank you all.

The album will be available in stores and download January 10. But if you want to listen before then:

1. Come to any of our upcoming shows, we'll have CD's and vinyls for sale at the merch desk.
2. Check out our music section and hear it streaming in full.

It's been a long time coming friends but Friday NOVEMBER 12TH at JIVE (181 Hindley Street) we Honey Pies are finally launching our debut album "Think of England". Its twelve pop songs long and was produced here in Adelaide with the young and talented Mr. Tom Barnes who has previously worked with bands like Leader Cheetah, Empire of the Sun, Colonel Kernel and The Transatlantics; and who I must say does a rather formidable impersonation of Dylan Moran.

The Honey Pies First Intercolonial Forays

This June sees us Honey Pies leave our beloved (or is that beleaguered?) Adelaide, to venture interstate for the first time, hopefully the first of many. We've six shows lined up in Melbourne and Sydney, with some uberwunderbands (check "Upcoming Shows" section for more details), and in keeping with this intercolonial theme, on June 5th we will be opening for Sydney band Parades at the Ed Castle in Adelaide. Since Powderfinger has called it quits, we've decided to be the new politically-minded, socially-conscious provocateurs of Australian rock, and as such, we will NOT be playing any Canberra shows during this tour: in protest of the government, man.

Also we didn't get offered any shows there.

Nonetheless, its an exciting month for us, and without saying too much, our July is looking even better. Until next time, friends.

Hello. Jon here with a few bits and pieces from Honey Pisland ("Pie-Land").

First of all, since Myspace is basically dead and I have never been one for necrophilia, The Honey Pies have conjured up this spiffy new webzone. It's a launching pad to pretty much every other site we are a member of, and is also the place to get all the up to date information about gigs and band news. Because we are still in what Kubler-Ross posited to be the first stage of grief -denial- we will still be keeping the myspace up to date with gig information and checking our inbox there. However, this site will be the more reliable source of all things Honey Pie, and our email is still the best way to correspond with us. That, or write us a letter. I can scarcely remember the last time I received a letter.

The band is taking the next month off from shows to rehearse some new songs, and I am playing a few acoustic pop-ins here and there. We are heading over to Sydney on the weekend of June 25th to play (fingers crossed) a few shows and it is looking like we might head over to do the same in Melbourne (toes crossed) around August. All that and we're still aiming to have our debut album -that old chestnut, I know- out this year... Quite a lot on our plate, or dish as it were (pie-dish, keep up would you), and once again, this site will be the place to hear all about it.

It’s the bane of many bands being told which combination of artists they sound like, but not so for Australian four-piece The Honey Pies - “Roy Orbison meets the Sex Pistols”, it’s been said - a description as preposterous as it is astute. Combining the unassuming simplicity of post-war pop with the fuzzier, kookier sounds of the pre-apocalypse, The Honey Pies create music which is at once nostalgic and revelatory. Pre-post-rock, if you will. Three years now they’ve gigged locally and toured nationally, supporting the likes of Tim Rogers, The Jezabels, Leader Cheetah, John Steel Singers, Eagle & The Worm, Parades, The Gin Club, Seabellies, Belles Will Ring and Oh Mercy.

Their debut album ‘Think of England’ (2010) was warmly received in native Adelaide, and garnered airplay and acclaim countrywide. Releasing their second album only a year later, the band are hoping to cement their reputation as one of Adelaide’s most sleep-deprived bands. Recorded by Dave Crowe (Mammoth Logic), mixed by Jack Farley (Love of Diagrams) and mastered by Steve Rooke (The Beatles, Animal Collective, The Breeders) at Abbey Road Studios, the as-yet-untitled album extends beyond the simple ambitions of the first, presenting something a little lusher, louder, braver and weirder. Their new album launches December 16th of 2011, at Jive Bar in Adelaide.
