It’s the bane of many bands being told which combination of artists they sound like, but not so for Australian four-piece The Honey Pies - “Roy Orbison meets the Sex Pistols”, it’s been said - a description as preposterous as it is astute. Combining the unassuming simplicity of post-war pop with the fuzzier, kookier sounds of the pre-apocalypse, The Honey Pies create music which is at once nostalgic and revelatory. Pre-post-rock, if you will. Three years now they’ve gigged locally and toured nationally, supporting the likes of Tim Rogers, The Jezabels, Leader Cheetah, John Steel Singers, Eagle & The Worm, Parades, The Gin Club, Seabellies, Belles Will Ring and Oh Mercy.
Their debut album ‘Think of England’ (2010) was warmly received in native Adelaide, and garnered airplay and acclaim countrywide. Releasing their second album only a year later, the band are hoping to cement their reputation as one of Adelaide’s most sleep-deprived bands. Recorded by Dave Crowe (Mammoth Logic), mixed by Jack Farley (Love of Diagrams) and mastered by Steve Rooke (The Beatles, Animal Collective, The Breeders) at Abbey Road Studios, the as-yet-untitled album extends beyond the simple ambitions of the first, presenting something a little lusher, louder, braver and weirder. Their new album launches December 16th of 2011, at Jive Bar in Adelaide.
They’re remarkable lads! But don’t take our word for it, read these carefully-vetted quotations:
'****...there's something a little bit vintage about your sound with the harmonies and classic songwriting. But you're also well in the modern day world with the riffs through this song (Fool in Love). Tops!'
Zan Rowe, Triple J
'ALBUM OF THE YEAR [...] so much more richness in character [...] From the intricate, insanely complex yet artfully accessible arrangements [...] To the sly tongue in cheek lyrics the wry wit, intelligence and humour of it [...] To the variety of songs: equally cohesive as they are utterly chaotic in shitcrazy eclecticism. And a lot of them are surefire instant classics too’
Spoz, spoz.blogspot.com
'BEST POP ALBUM OF 2010 [...] Radio-friendly, rockin' and occasionally raunchy, The Honey Pies' debut album captures that sound of "true music" that we all have ingrained on us from before we were born’
Luke, Play/Pause/Play
‘Sometimes on this entirely appropriately named album from the Adelaide quartet you figure they will be listed in the record store under S for snotty [...] This is an England as seen by the likes of the underappreciated Futureheads and the too rarely mentioned these days Soft Boys. And if it sounds like it was recorded for $7.50, so what?’
Bernard Zuel, Sydney Morning Herald
'As a modernist, I appreciate their modernity.'
Tim Rogers, renowned modernist
‘...the band veers from surf-rock to doo-wop vocal harmonies, World War II themed Britpop and vocal-chord freakouts that would make Craig Nicholls blush through the bong smoke [...] Jon Marco's output has hinted at the makings of one of Adelaide's - or even Australia's - better pop songwriters’
Walter Marsh, dB Magazine
‘Not long after I arrived it was pretty clear that The Honey Pies had walked out on stage [...] such screams of adulation are normally only reserved for international acts. You could tell that people don’t just like The Honey Pies, they love them’
Adam, theaureview.com
‘With outfits like that I expected something a bit more reserved, but these guys rocked out with a energy that'd rival The Vines [...] when they ripped through their more grungy, rocking numbers on stage, it was electrifying’
Dom Alessio, Triple J
'"Fool in Love" is one of my favourite tracks of the year, complete with soaring fuzzed guitar and a vocal that really tugs at you and lifts you up at the same time'
Pix, whiteboydancefloor.blogspot.com
'The Honey Pies have one foot solely planted in Liverpool's Cavern Club and the other in Burt
Bacharach's bed room'
Matthew Hayward, underdalefacepalm.blogspot.com
'The melodies are sweet, verging on timeless, the vocals are heartfelt and the twin guitar chords meld into a sweet fluid sound [...] the band could definable as a formerly rough diamond getting ever closer to being cut into shape'
FasterLouder, fasterlouder.com.au
‘The Honey Pies a band you should promptly be adding to your warm weather playlist’
Emma, theworldinapapercup.com
‘This is unadulterated pop goodness - fast-paced, liable to give you diabetes - with no pretension, no need to delude the charm with even a lick of anything else’
Noah Sanders, soundonthesound.com
‘...this is just really fucking brilliantly enjoyable pop music, with enough bite and grizzle to be beyond mere musical pastiche, and the kind of lyrics which swing between the affectionately saccharine and the hilariously cynical with such mischief [...] It’s the kind of album that would effortlessly charm your parents and deflower you sweatily on the sofa the minute they left the house’
